Burials At Sea
Burial at sea, is an option for everybody. It is not restricted to former sailors or Naval personnel.

However, the Marine Consents and Environment Unit of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) or in Wales, the National Assembly, does not encourage burial at sea. This is because a body buried at sea is subject to movement by currents, with the inevitable risk of it being returned to shore or even trawled up in fishing gear. This causes considerable distress to relatives and friends of the deceased. In order to avoid that risk, the Ministry recommends that a more acceptable procedure is for the deceased to be cremated and the cremated remains to be scattered at sea. This procedure can be undertaken without a licence.

Over the years, one of the services offered by Exmouth & District Funeral Services, now including Exmouth & District Funeral Services, is to provide a burial at sea.

We are located extremely close geographically to one of only two companies specialising in the second part of the service – the actual burial itself.

Essentially, this type of funeral is a two-part service for a number of reasons. Effecting these two factors has numerous variables most notably, the weather.

There are a number of considerations that need identifying before deciding on this type of funeral. Most importantly, the definitive reason or confirmation that this type of burial is required. This is due to the possible distress to relatives and friends of the deceased. Cost would be another important consideration.
At Exmouth & District Funeral Services, we realise that this is an unusual and difficult time for you. As such, your contact with us is a personal and professional priority. Our primary goal is to be available to you and perform the professional and caring service needed, in order to reduce the burden to you and your family.
